RECAP: Northwood baseball earns trip to the NCAA Super Regionals with a dramatic 5-4 walk-off win over Grand Valley State in 12 innings Saturday (May 17).

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Grand Valley State came out fast in the top of the first inning, plating three runs on five hits to take an early lead.
  • Northwood responded in the bottom of the first, starting with a Drew Charters RBI single.
  • Alex Jarboe followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2.
  • NU tied the score on a double play, sending the game to the second inning with the score tied 3-3.
  • Both teams pitching found its groove at that point, as the score remained 3-3 until the sixth inning. GVSU connected on a solo home run to make the score 4-3.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Josh Getz came through with big hit. His double tied the game at 4-4.
  • The score remained 4-4 until the bottom of the 12th inning. After a leadoff single by Brendan Hammer, Brendan Narr sacrificed Hammer to second. With two outs and Hammer on third, Logan Voth came through with an RBI single to drive in the winning run and give the Timberwolves the victory.

  • This is the second time Northwood has gone to the regional final (2017). This is the first time Northwood has advance through a sub-regional, as the 2017 team reached the final during an eight-team, one weekend regional. The NCAA moved to a two-weekend model in the 2019 season.
  • The Timberwolves have controlled play in the late innings of their games in the post season. Going back to the G-MAC Tournament, Northwood is 7-0 in post season play. In those seven games, Northwood has out-scored its opponents 21-1 from the eighth inning on. Northwood trailed in all three games of the NCAA Regional in the eighth inning before winning each game (6-3 vs. Lewis, 12-8 vs. GVSU, 4-3 vs. GVSU).
