INDIANAPOLIS—Players from Trevecca Nazarene and Hillsdale headlined the end of the year awards as Will Shannon and Caleb Marks were voted as the top player and pitcher in the Great Midwest for 2024. Cedarville’s Boston Torres was voted as the top Freshman in the league.
Shannon, an all-conference selection, mashed a league-high 15 home runs this season and drove in 52 with 50 runs scored. He totaled 63 hits with a .426 overall batting average and .436 in conference play.
Marks was one of the most consistent pitchers this season, recording an undefeated 7-0 overall record. He registered an ERA of 1.62, while striking out 33 batters through 66.2 innings-pitched.
Boston Torres of Cedarville was voted the 2024 Freshman of the Year for an outstanding performance during his collegiate debut. Torres was a dynamic player for the Yellow Jackets, playing both infield and outfield this season. He is fourth in the conference in hitting percentage at .394 through all 49 games. Boston is third in hits totaling 70 this season with 52 RBIs.
John Schaly of Ashland University was voted the Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to a regular season title. He led Ashland to an overall mark of 38-11 while going 24-8 in G-MAC play. The Eagles earned the top seed in the conference tournament while landing five individuals on the all-conference teams. Schaly and the Eagles lead the league with a team batting average of .334 with 568 total hits.
Tiffin’s Ty Hatfield was awarded the Elite 26 for academic excellence. Hatfield, a junior from Fredericktown, is majoring in accounting.
The Great Midwest Baseball Championship features the league’s top-eight teams based on winning percentage. First-round games will begin Wednesday, May 8 at Noon ET as No. 5 Findlay faces No. 5 Ohio Dominican at Prasco Park’s Legacy Field.
Live coverage of all games will be available on the Great Midwest Digital Network. The top two teams after day three will advance to Saturday’s championship, slated for Noon ET.
