INDIANAPOLIS-- Seven institutions were represented on the Great Midwest Men’s Lacrosse All-Conference Team that was released Wednesday, prior to the semi-final matches.
The coaches voted for the all-conference team and individual award winners, which included a first team, second team, and third team.
Conference tournament top seed Seton Hill is getting ready to face the No. 4 seed Walsh, while Mercyhurst (No. 2) will play Lake Erie (No.3).
Seton Hill and Mercyhurst headlined the majority of the first team list, which includes three from the attack position, three defensemen, three midfielders, a long and short stick midfielder, a specialist, and a goalkeeper.
Mercyhurst claimed three individual awards including Myles Hamm as Offensive Player of the Year and Charlie Gleason as Defensive Player of the Year.
Hamm averaged 3.36 goals per game and totaled 47 this season. He ranks second in the conference in points per game at 4.29.
Gleason was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year after totaling 11 ground balls and causing five turnovers on the year.
Shawn Doran joins his teammates as the Specialist of the Year. At the faceoff position, Doran registered a percentage of .671 and leads the league in ground balls per game at 10.50.
The Great Midwest Coach of the Year was Seton Hill’s Brian Novotny, who in his 17
th season, has led the program to an undefeated conference record of 7-0 and a regular season title. The Griffins are also ranked No. 7 in the NCAA North Region and No. 15 in the USILA team rankings.
Malone’s Zac Smargiasso was named the Great Midwest Freshman of the Year, while also earning third team all-conference in his rookie season. Smargiasso was the league-leader in assists per game, averaging nearly two per contest.
Walsh’s Charles Williams was recognized as the Elite 26 Award Winner for Academic Excellence. Williams is a senior majoring in computer science with a cyber security focus.
The Great Midwest Championship will begin on Wednesday, May 3 with Seton Hill and Mercyhurst serving as host sites. The highest winning seed from Wednesday’s matches will host the Championship, set for Saturday, May 6.
