INDIANAPOLIS— Ashland’s Annie Roshak was named the 2023 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year in a voting of the league’s women’s basketball coaches. Karen Booker, the first-year head coach at Trevecca Nazarene, was picked Coach of the Year.
Malone’s Erin Kaufman was voted by the coaches as the league’s Freshman of the Year and Reeva Hammelman of Kentucky Wesleyan earned Elite 26 Award winner for academic excellence.
Roshak led the conference and all of Division II in field goal percentage at .681, while ranking 11
th in scoring at 13.6 points per game. She averaged 5.5 rebounds and almost one block a game (0.8). Roshak leads an Ashland team that ranks No.1 in the country with a perfect 29-0 record.
Booker, in her first season with the Trojans, led her to team to a 20-8 overall record while earning the No. 3 seed in the G-MAC tournament. Last season, Trevecca was 5-22 overall and won only four conference games. Booker’s squad is shooting 43.3% from the field and will make their first appearance in the conference semi-finals since the 2015-16 academic year.
Erin Kaufman played and started in all 29 games for the Pioneers. She was named the conference’s top freshman after averaging 11.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per contest.
In all, five different players from Ashland earned all-conference honors. Annie Roshak, Hallie Heidemann, and Hayley Smith were voted first-team and Zoe Miller was a second-team selection. Heidemann is also joined by Savaya Brockington on the All-Defensive team.
In addition to Roshak, regular season runner-up Kentucky Wesleyan saw Tahlia Walton and Cali Nolot earn first-team notice. Shiya Hoosier made the All-Defensive team after averaging 2.1 steals per game.
Four teams will meet in Ashland this weekend as they aim for the Great Midwest title. Top seeded Ashland hosts No. 4 Malone at 5:00 P.M. on Friday, March 3. No. 2 Kentucky Wesleyan and No. 3 Trevecca Nazarene will follow in the second semifinal game of the evening.
