CANTON, Ohio- It was a successful day at the C.T. Branin Natatorium as the first session of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference / Mountain East Conference Swimming & Diving Championships took place Tuesday evening.
The Findlay Oilers headlined Day 1 of events as both the men and women lead heading into the second day of competition.
The Women totaled 463 points, including two individual first-place finishes.
Emily Mears-Bentley shattered the meet record in the 200-yard individual medley. The freshman recorded a time of 2:03.94, almost exactly three seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
Troie Grubbs also earned a first-place finish as she tied Hillsdale’s Marie Taylor in the 50-yard freestyle. Both Grubbs and Taylor registered B-cut times of 23.93.
The Findlay women also earned points with first-place finishes in the 200-yard Medley Relay as well as the 200-yard Freestyle Relay.
The Hillsdale Chargers are defending women’s team champions. The Chargers totaled 416.5 points and are in second place at the end of day one. Hillsdale Sophomore Elise Mason was the top finisher in the 1000-yard Freestyle with a time of 10:19.37.
Ashland finds themselves in third place and Malone is in 10
th through event 48.
On the men’s side, Findlay dominated with five first-place finishes on the day for 515.5 points. Freshman Filippi Matteo won the 1000-yard freestyle race and broke the meet record by over four seconds. Daniel Garcia also earned points for Findlay as he finished first in the 200-yard Individual Medley. Sophomore Camilo Marrugo rounds out top individual finishers for the Oilers in the 50-yard Freestyle with a time of 19.87.
The Oilers’ men are aiming for their sixth consecutive team title, as they lead by more than 200 points.
Ashland University is in second place, and Malone finds themselves in seventh, respectively.
