MIDLAND, Mich., The Northwood Women’s Soccer Team made history Saturday afternoon, capturing the program’s first Great Midwest title and snapping Ashland’s two-year win streak.
The championship match featured outstanding defensive performances from both teams, sending the match into overtime and eventually PKs. The Timberwolves would go on to become victorious, connecting on four PKs while the Eagles secured two.
Freshman goalie Lindsay Jacob led a Timberwolf defense that allowed nine shots on goal for the day. Jacob saved eight of the nine shots. During PKs, the freshman came up with two huge saves, including a saved PK with 00:35 left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Jacob’s dominant performance in net earned her Great Midwest MVP honors.
Katie Foster, Kendall Buchman, Juliana Paoletti, and Mia Thompson were each good for one PK apiece. The Timberwolves totaled 11 shots and six corner kicks on the day.
Ashland’s Maddie Dolenga posted a game-high nine saves on nine shots on goal.
Northwood will receive the automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Tournament. The rest of the field will wait for the NCAA Selection Show slated for Monday at 6:30 P.M. ET. Ashland, Cedarville, and Findlay were all part of the final regional rankings.
