CANTON, Ohio- The depth of Walsh’s program was showcased on Saturday as the Cavaliers earned their fifth straight team title in seven years following the conclusion of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Championship.
The Cavaliers scored 53 points in the 8K competition with a combined team time of 2:07:57. It was strength in numbers for head coach Rob Mizicko, who was also voted the Great Midwest Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. The Cavaliers had three first-team all-conference selections, led by sophomore Noah Graham who finished fifth overall. Juniors Drew Monahan and Mitchel Dunham were not far behind at sixth and eighth place. Xavier Foehl rounded out all-conference selections from Walsh with an 11
th place finish, earning second-team honors. Walsh is ranked No. 14 in the national coaches poll and No. 3 in the Midwest Region.
The Northwood Timberwolves earned a second place finish for the second consecutive year. Preston Earl was among the top 10 and helped the Timberwolves clock a team time of 2:09:03. Northwood earned three additional all-conference selections on the second team in Carson Laney, Joseph Shaya, and Brandon Boyd.
Noah Fisher of Findlay finished first overall to earn the 2023 Runner of the Year award. Fisher finished with a time of 24:41.0, 25 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
The Cedarville Yellow Jackets earned a third place finish with a team time of 2:08.34. Isaiah Kelly led the pack as he finished second overall and a first-team selection.
Tiffin finished fourth followed by Malone to round out the top 5. The Chargers were led by Alex Mitchell, who finished third. Tiffin’s Nathaniel Ondracek placed seventh with a time of 25:31.5.
The sport’s Elite 26 Award Winner was Cedarville’s Caleb Yun, a sophomore majoring in Nursing. The Elite 26 Award recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete at the conference championship level in his or her sport while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.
Teams will now start preparation for the NCAA Midwest Regional in Evansville, IN. Regionals are set to take place on Nov. 4 with the National Championship on Nov. 18 in Joplin, MO.
