INDIANAPOLIS—The predicted rank order by the league’s coaches for the spring season has been filed with the release of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll presented by Under Armour unveiled on Thursday afternoon.
The 2023 spring season promises to be another entertaining journey with the conference tournament at PRASCO Park in Mason, Ohio. Eight playoff qualifiers will make the postseason while competing for bids to the NCAA Regional.
This season, the conference is split into two divisions, a North Division, and a South Division, with each containing six teams.
Five different programs received at least one first-place vote in this year’s preseason coaches poll.
Favored in the North Division are the Ashland Eagles with six first place votes and 56 points. Ashland finished second in the conference tournament last season, which earned them a bid to the NCAA Regional. The Eagles finished with a record of 35-21 and are receiving votes in the Collegiate Baseball News. They will look to replace several All-Conference selections in hopes to celebrate another post-season run.
Conference newcomer Northwood was selected as the preseason runner-up following a 31-23-1 record last spring and garnered four first-place votes by the coaches. The Timberwolves are also receiving votes in the national poll.
Northwood edged out Walsh by two votes. The Cavaliers won the Great Midwest Championship last spring, which earned them a bid to the NCAA Regionals. Head Coach Tim Mead returns Freshman of the Year in Brady Maciak, who ranked ninth in the league in hitting with an average of .365.
Hillsdale, Malone, and Lake Erie round out teams in the North Division, respectively.
In the South, Trevecca Nazarene received a high of nine first-place votes and a total of 59 points on the ballot. The Trojans led the Great Midwest in batting last season with a team average of .318. Trevecca won the 2021 conference tournament champion and holds the most conference titles in baseball at four. Head Coach Chase Sain returns four First-Team selections as Treveca looks to win their fifth conference championship this spring.
Tiffin, another previous conference champion, was voted preseason runner-up in the South Division. Tiffin received three first-place votes after posting a 29-19 record last season.
Kentucky Wesleyan is polled third with 43 points as the Panthers prowl for another tournament title.
Ohio Dominican, Findlay, and Cedarville were slotted at No. 4, No.5, and No. 6 in the South.
Teams will start as early as February 3 with the conference schedule opening weekend falling on Friday, March 17
