ERIE, Pa. – Seton Hill captured its third Great Midwest Men’s Lacrosse Championship on Saturday beating Mercyhurst 14-10. It was the fifth consecutive time Seton Hill and Mercyhurst have met for the title.
This one was all Griffins from the start. SHU took a quick 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the game and would finish the first quarter up 5-1. Four different Griffins would score in the first period alone, the last coming off the stick of Thomas Hanulak with less than 30 seconds left in the period.
Mercyhurst’s would find some rhythm in the second. Bryce Johnson found the back of the net to open the scoring. Later Myles Hamm would score two and Johnson again to cut the Griffins lead, but SHU would take a 7-5 lead into intermission.
Seton Hill responded in a big way to open the second half scoring two goals to extend its lead, 9-5. The Lakers would find one final push rattling off three goals in less than two minutes to cut the lead to one but that’s as close as they would get.
Zach Estabrooks led the Griffins with four goals. Kevin Mo was credited with the win in the net after a phenomenal performance highlighted by 18 saves.
In the final Atlantic Region rankings, Mercyhurst was tabbed fourth while Seton Hill found themsleves at eight. The top six seeds advance to the NCAA tournament. The NCAA selection show will take place Sunday night.
