MASON, Ohio - After 11 games at Prasco Park, the Walsh Cavaliers are the 2022 Great Midwest Baseball Champions. Walsh, the tourney's No. 6 seed, went 4-1 in the event and held on to win the decisive game 8-5 over Ashland.
It was Walsh's first baseball conference tournament title during its NCAA era, since 2013. Walsh earned the Great Midwest's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional. The selection show is Sunday night at 10 p.m. ET.
Game 10: Ashland 8, Walsh 6 (BOX SCORE)
Ashland stayed alive and forced the necessary final by jumping on Walsh early and holding serve down the stretch in an 8-6 win. Austin Eifrid led the charge for AU with a 4-for-5, two-run effort and Micah Allen scored three runs and hit a home run.
The Eagles got out to a 3-0 lead when Tim Zeller hit a 2-run double in the top of the 3rd. The teams traded runs into the middle of the game when Allen hit an RBI single to give Ashland a 5-3 lead. He later homered in the 7th before Walsh would rally with longballs of its own. Jacob Beachy and Davis Burick each homered for WU to make it interesting until the end by Ashland's Perry Bewley closed the door with his 10th save of the season.
Three players had two hits for the Cavs and Austin Marko drew four walks.
Championship Game 11: Walsh 8, Ashland 5 (BOX SCORE)
Walsh capitalized on seven Ashland errors and got a home run from Austin Marko in the final game of the tournament. WU scored four times in the top of the 1st inning - all unearned - as AU made three errors to start the game. Walsh would go on to lead 6-1 by the 5th inning and kept pace to capture the trophy.
After walking four times in the day's first game, Marko hit a 2-run blast to left in his first at bat and the tone was set for the Cavs. Jacob Beachy went 2-for-3 with a double and walk for Walsh. Shea Simmer and Joel Holiga also doubled. Ashland actually out-hit Walsh 11-7 and three different Eagles had two hits each. Nick Lallathin was credited with the win and Brant Alazaus earned the save.
