INDIANAPOLIS-- Teams and individuals that secured automatic qualifications and at-large selections were announced Monday evening for the 2022 Division II Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships.
In order to be eligible to participate in the championships, student-athletes had to have participated in their respective NCAA regional competitions that were held this past weekend.
The top three finishing teams earned automatic qualification while the top two individuals not from those advancing teams also earned an automatic qualification. The top five individuals in each region also auto qualified.
On the men’s side, Walsh University classified as automatic qualifiers as they placed third in the Midwest Regional. The Cavaliers finished third behind Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State. 2022 Great Midwest Runner of the Year, Zach Kreft, placed first overall and left Kenosha as the Midwest Regional Champion with a 10K time of 30:45.33.
Also representing the Great Midwest are the Northwood Timberwolves. This is the first time in program history Northwood has qualified as a team for the National Tournament. The Timberwolves placed seventh of 28 teams at the Midwest Regional race this past weekend. Senior Dillan Haviland finished 26
th overall with a 10K time of 31:57.60. Three Northwood runners finished in the Top 50 in the event.
A handful of men’s cross country runners qualified as individuals. Evan Lesit (CU), Jordan Foster (UF), Noah Fisher (UF), and Max Gucker (MU) secured bids to compete at the championship.
The Cedarville Yellowjackets Women’s Cross Country team continued their fall success with a second place finish at regionals. Five individuals placed in the Top 25 of the race as the Yellowjackets registered a team time of 1:49:57.15 in the 6K race. Savannah Ackley led the way, finishing seventh individually.
Several individuals on the Women’s side will also compete on the national stage. Liz Wamsley and Meg Scheske from Hillsdale qualified as individuals in the Midwest Region. Wamsley finished fourth overall and Scheske placed eighth.
The NCAA Division II National Championship is set to take place Dec. 2 in University Place, Wash.
