CARY, N.C. – Following a reseeding of the final eight teams contending in the NCAA Baseball Championship bracket, No. 4 Trevecca Nazarene continued its remarkable postseason journey on Saturday as the first Great Midwest Athletic Conference program to make it this far.
The Trojans fell by a score of 7-6 in the 10th inning, a tough outcome after having the defending national champion and No. 5 seed Tampa on the ropes for several innings.
The Trojans officially moved to the consolation bracket and will play again on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET against the loser of top seed Central Missouri or No. 8 Northwest Nazarene.
Trevecca Nazarene had already captured the Midwest Region title, while sweeping the Great Midwest regular season and tournament titles.
Runs exploded on to the scoreboard early and often as TNU was playing its first game since May 30 when the Trojans outlasted Davenport in the Midwest Region Championship series.
Trevecca senior infielder Ethan Harrison belted a go-ahead three-run homer in the second inning. The Trojans had to answer a three spot put up by Tampa in the Spartans' first trip to the plate, but did so against UT starter Eric Linder.
The Trojans knocked out Linder at the end of the second inning as all-region outfielder Braden Odom, who hit for the cycle vs. Davenport, hit a solo shot to put TNU in the run column. Odom's ninth homer of the spring traveled an estimated 408 feet to right center at the USA Baseball Nationall Training Complex.
The Trojans exercised discipline at the plate while SS Trey Vanderpool brought TNU within one with a fielder's choice RBI and Harrison, who singled earlier, alertly raced home with the tying run on a wild pitch.
No runs would be scored until the top of the seventh inning as Drew Ehrhard made a 6-3 deficit for Tampa disappear with one swing of the bat. Ehrhard's three-run blast made things all square before going into extra innings.
Ehrhard represented the eventual winning run after doubling to lead off the 10th inning. Tampa moved Ehhard 90 feet on a sacrifice and took the lead on a fielder's choice RBI play.
Recently named All-American RP Jay Benard of TNU pitched three strong innings following the efforts of starter Drew Pierce and first team all-conference reliever Tiger Cox while being charged with the loss.
Another DII All-American reliever and 2021 Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Year Jordan Leasure was as good as advertised out of the bullpen with 8 strikeouts in 3.1 perfect innings.
