ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The opportunity to play for a Midwest Region title in the NCAA Championship bracket is getting that much closer for second-seeded Trevecca Nazarene after defeating No. 4 Lindenwood on Friday, 7-4.
The Trojans, Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular season and tournament champions, are now 2-0 in the NCAA postseason and double-elimination regional bracket. TNU advanced through the first round after toppling No. 5 seed Quincy on Thursday.
TNU had to wait until this morning to find out its second-round opponent and learned the Lions, after defeating No. 3 seed Davenport from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), would play their second game of the day later in the afternoon.
Future Great Midwest Athletic Conference member institution Northwood, the No. 6 seed, or No. 3 Davenport will be lined up the face the Trojans on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET. At the time of release, Northwood and Davenport were entering the fourth inning of their game at the Lou Brock Complex.
For Trevecca Nazarene to aim for its third straight win, the Trojans would meet the winner of Lindenwood / Davenport for a 7 p.m. ET game on Saturday night.
Middle-inning magic was manufactured again by the offense as the Trojans stared directly at a 4-0 deficit at the end of five frames.
Bryant Goolsby belted a three-run homer and doubled while going 3-for-5 with three RBI. Ethan Harrison was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a stolen base while Shawn Wallwork and John O’Dwyer also doubled.
Starting pitcher Chase Haley was effective to pick up his seventh win of the spring. The bullpen did the rest, locking down the Lions as Tyler Koprowski and all-region closer Jay Benard combined for four shutout innings.
Benard recorded the final six outs, similar to going above and beyond in the championship tournament title game against Tiffin, to preserve the win for a save.
TNU pieced together a five-run sixth inning to take the lead. Wallwork found the gap in left center for an RBI double and one batter later, Goolsby sat on a 3-1 offering from Lindenwood starting pitcher Tyler Cassmeyer to tie the game up at 4-4.
O’Dwyer delivered a two-out RBI double that represented the go-ahead run off the new man in from the bullpen.
Harrison delivered a big two-run single with two outs in the ninth inning for insurance as the Trojans worked the count and drew a pair of walks while moving runners into scoring position.
