ST. CHARLES, Mo. – No. 2 seed Trevecca Nazarene had to exercise a bit of patience through a lengthy weather delay before advancing in the winner's bracket with a victory over No. 5 Quincy in the NCAA Championship Midwest Regional on Thursday.
Only two of the three scheduled contests were completed at the Lou Brock Complex on the campus of Lindenwood University as storms in the area put the first game between future Great Midwest Athletic Conference member No. 6 Northwood and No. 1 Illinois-Springfield to a screeching halt.
TNU's start time against the Hawks of the Great Lakes Valley Conference changed twice in the past 24 hours, including a delayed 7:25 p.m. ET first pitch as NU and UIS wrapped up.
Despite the frenetic chain of events, the Trojans were poised and calm in their first national tournament appearance under Great Midwest Coach of the Year Chase Sain, executing a huge seventh inning to beat Quincy, 8-3.
The Trojans scored six runs after the seventh inning stretch, capping a comeback in impressive fashion as the Hawks led 2-0 through five full frames. Alert base running from all-conference second baseman Ethan Harrison allowed the Trojans to pull within one and Bryant Goolsby delivered a game-tying RBI hit in the sixth inning.
The floodgates opened as TNU, conference regular season and tournament champions, turned through the batting order and battered starting RHP Riley Martin.
All-region and first team all-conference outfielder Braden Odom drove in two with a clutch hit and Harrison added an RBI base knock and Shawn Wallwork, who played just one game in the conference tournament due to injury, roped a run-scoring double.
TNU starter RHP Drew Pierce delivered a quality start in the postseason with six innings and four strikeouts for the no-decision. He was tagged for a pair of earned runs on four hits and walked a pair against an offense that ranked second in the GLVC with a .335 batting average.
Earning the win in relief was all-region and first team all-conference reliever Tiger Cox, who improved to 5-0 for what normally be a save situation that late in a regulation contest. Cox finished the game with three shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts.
The Timberwolves of Northwood pulled the upset in Game 1, winning over the Prairie Stars by a score of 13-9.
The Trojans (33-10) will play on Friday at 5 p.m. ET (4 p.m. CT) in the winner's bracket against either No. 3 Davenport or No. 4 Lindenwood. Darkness prevented the last first-round contest from getting underway under the lights on Thursday.
