Tennis Athletes of the Week (April 28)

INDIANAPOLIS - Hillsdale swept the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships to earn the Chargers a pair of conference weekly honors. 

Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week

Hillsdale defeated Findlay 4-1 in the semifinals and defeated Tiffin 4-3 for the conference championship. Gilbert was 4-0 in his matches, picking up a pair of wins at No. 5 singles and partnering with Brian Hackman to add two wins at No. 3 doubles. 

In the semifinals, the Chargers earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles. Gilbert and Hackman took No. 3 doubles, 7-6 (6). Gilbert then won 6-3, 6-3 over Findlay’s Octavio Carrasco to clinch the win. 

In the championship match, the Chargers once again gained early momentum by winning the doubles point. Gilbert and Hackman defeated Tiffin’s No. 3 doubles pair, 6-3. It all came down to Gilbert’s No. 5 singles match to break the 3-3 tie. After a back-and-forth third set, Gilbert pulled out the win (1-6, 6-4, 7-6) as the Chargers became Great Midwest champions.

Hillsdale beat Tiffin 4-2 in the semifinals and Findlay 4-2 in the championship match. Sarah Hackman went 4-0 throughout the championship tournament with a pair of wins at No. 2 singles as well as two wins at No. 1 doubles with partner Hannah Cimpeanu. 

The Chargers won at No. 1 and 2 doubles to earn the doubles point over Tiffin. Hackman and Cimpeanu won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Hackman then bounced back after losing the second set to pick up a key win at No. 2 singles (6-4, 1-6, 6-2). 

With No. 2 and No. 3 doubles being split in the championship match, the doubles point came down to No. 1 doubles, where Hackman and Cimpeanu picked up a hard-fought win, 7-6 (2), over Findlay. Hackman then won at No. 2 doubles 6-1, 6-2.
