OWENSBORO, Ky. - The No. 4 seed prevailed on Saturday as Hillsdale took the 2021 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship title.
The Chargers (7-6) defeated No. 3 Findlay (9-4) in a 4-2 final match.
After Friday’s semifinals were conducted outdoors at Centre Courts, the remainder of the tournament was moved indoors due to weather.
Hillsdale gained momentum early by winning the doubles point as Hannah Cimpeanu and Sarah Hackman won at No. 1 doubles, 7-6 (7-2) and Canela Luna and Sophia Spinazze took No. 2 doubles, 6-4.
Findlay's duo of Luciana Pereyra and Laura Brito earned the win at No. 3 doubles, 6-2.
Hillsdale's Sophia Spinazze delivered the decisive win at No. 4 singles to break the 3-3 tie and lead the Chargers to victory. After falling 0-6 in the first set, Spinazze came back to win the next two sets (6-2, 6-3).
The Chargers earned points at No. 2 and 3 singles as Sarah Hackman won 6-1, 6-2 and Canela Luna won 6-0, 7-6 (7-2).
Findlay picked up wins at No. 5 and 6 singles as Emily Hadler won 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 and Laura Brito won 6-2, 6-4.
No. 1 singles went unfinished as Great Midwest Player of the Year Laiying Alvarado of Findlay and Hillsdale's Cimpeanu battled into three sets before the match was called.
Hillsdale head coach Nicole Walbright and her program will wait and see where the postseason takes them next as the regional selections will be announced on Tuesday, May 4 at 8:30 p.m. ET on ncaa.com.
