OWENSBORO, Ky.
– No. 4 Hillsdale and No. 3 Findlay pulled off respective semifinal upsets to make Saturday’s final in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship bracket on Friday.

The outdoor Centre Courts with Kentucky Wesleyan College served as host for this year’s event once again as the top four seeds began the postseason.

In each semifinal, the competitive women’s matches went down to the wire, as Hillsdale edged Tiffin, 4-2, and Findlay defeated Walsh, 4-2. Doubles points were key, especially for gaining momentum as the match is played to the point of decision.

In the early match, four singles bouts went to at least three sets as Hillsdale and regular season conference champion Tiffin put it all on the line. The tandem of Hannah Cimpeanu and Sarah Hackman along with Canela Luna and Sophia Spinazze secured the team point.

Hackman came through with a huge singles win at No. 2, toppling first team all-conference selection Anais Geslin in three sets. Luna also won in three sets and Spinazze had the upper hand in her straight set finish.

The battle of the No. 1’s, first team all-conference stars Abbie-Jade Riley and Cimpeanu, went in favor of the Dragons.

Great Midwest Player of the Year Laiying Alvarado was the first singles match completed against Walsh as the junior won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Additional singles support came from Emily Hadler and Laura Brito, who rallied for a three-set win.

The Oilers claimed the doubles point as Alvarado and 2018-19 conference player of the year Samantha Sweet won 6-0. Luciana Pereyra and Brito won the No. 3 matchup vs. the Cavaliers.

Hillsdale and Findlay will compete for the conference championship tomorrow at 10:30 am CT at Centre Courts. In case of inclement weather, the remainder of the tournament would be moved indoors to adjacent courts.
