INDIANAPOLIS – Sophomore standouts from Ohio Dominican and Tiffin were rewarded with Great Midwest Athletic Conference Baseball Players of the Week honors as announced on Wednesday.
Player of the Week
Alex Brill
Ohio Dominican
OF/RHP
Sophomore
Amherst, OH (Firelands HS)
Brill is the third ODU position player to earn player of the week honors and the Panthers just have guys who get on base, run and can mash, as they proved with their series win over Ohio Valley.
The versatile sophomore went 8-of-16 at the dish (.500) while ripping three home runs and recording 11 RBI with nine runs scored. Three of his four games were multi-hit performances and he also doubled twice.
Brill also walked four times and stole a pair of bases.
Brill homered in three consecutive games as the Panthers manufactured 50 runs over a four-game slate. In Friday’s series opener, he was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and homered in the top of the ninth inning.
In Game 2, Brill launched a three-run shot in the seventh inning in the late stages of an attempted rally. He was credited with 4 RBI and was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
In a 25-11 thrashing to start Saturday, Brill homered again in a 2-for-4 line and was part of an explosive 14-run first inning vs. OVU pitching. He doubled in the series finale.
Pitcher of the Week
Tyler Wehrle
Tiffin
RHP
Sophomore
Bradner, OH (Lakota HS)
Wehrle continues to stymie some of the league’s top offenses, this time doing it through a turn in the rotation against Trevecca Nazarene for his second pitcher of the week nod this spring.
The righty pitched a complete game in the Dragons’ win of the series, striking out six and allowing just one unearned run as he improved to 6-1.
Wehrle gave up just two hits and worked around a handful of walks in an 8-1 Tiffin victory.
Wehrle lowered his ERA to 3.31 and now has 41 strikeouts registered through 35.1 innings pitched. He has appeared in seven games this spring with six starts.
