OWENSBORO, Ky. - Findlay, Hillsdale, Tiffin and Walsh, are primed to compete in the 2021 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships set for Friday and Saturday at the Owensboro Daviess County Tennis Association, Centre Court.
The Hillsdale men clinched the regular season title, going undefeated in conference play (5-0). Walsh secured the No. 2 seed at 4-1 in the conference, while Tiffin and Findlay earn the No. 3 and 4 seeds at 3-2 and 2-3, respectively.
No. 1 Hillsdale is set to face No. 4 Findlay at 1:30 p.m. CT, with No. 2 Walsh taking on No. 3 Tiffin at 3:30 p.m. CT in the semifinal round on Friday. The winners of the semifinal matches will face off for the conference championship on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. CT.
Walsh’s Jakob Riglewski will be tough to beat in No. 1 singles as he is 15-2 on the season. At No. 2 doubles, Hillsdale’s Brennan Cimpeanu is a top contender as he has yet to lose a match at 12-0.
Hillsdale’s Sean Barstow and Tyler Conrad as well as Walsh’s Alex Medina and Riglewski both have 10 wins at No. 1 doubles. Hillsdale’s Cimpeanu and Gabe Katz are 13-1 on the season in No. 2 doubles.
The regionally ranked Tiffin women secured the No. 1 seed and the regular season championship. Walsh women also secured the No. 2 seed at 5-1 in the league. Findlay is the No. 3 seed at 4-2 and Hillsdale is the No. 4 seed at 2-3.
No. 1 Tiffin will face No. 4 Hillsdale at 9:30 a.m. CT and No. 2 Walsh will follow against No. 3 Findlay at 11:30 a.m. CT in Friday’s semifinals. The winners will play for the conference championship on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. CT.
Findlay’s Laiying Alvardo leads all players at 8-0 in No. 1 singles. Tiffin’s Abbie-Jade Riley is another top contender in No. 1 singles at 12-3. Tiffin also has top contenders in No. 2 and No. 3 singles as Anais Geslin is 11-2 in No. 2 singles and Emily Sim is 5-0 in No. 3 singles. Walsh has quality contenders in No. 3-5 singles as Nicole Beidacki, Clara Drasch and Chiara Wolf all have double-digit wins in their respective spots in the lineup.
Findlay’s Alvarado and Samatha Sweet are 7-3 in No. 1 doubles while Tiffin’s Geslin and Alessandra Maganuco are 8-4. At No. 2 doubles, Walsh’s Beidacki and Isabella Sanchez are a top contender at 5-0 on the season. Findlay’s Madison Arquette and Emily Hadler are 4-0 in No. 3 doubles this season.
Spectators are permitted at the championship but in the event that it is moved inside due to weather, there may be restricted attendance numbers.
The all-conference voting process is underway with eight first-team and eight second-team honorees as well as the Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year for each gender being announced on Thursday afternoon.
