CANTON, Ohio – The team leads for Findlay on the men's side and Hillsdale in the women's point totals were extended as day two of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference/Mountain East Conference Swimming & Diving Championships concluded on Wednesday.
The Oilers lead by nearly 150 points in the eight-team men's race with 595.5 points. Notre Dame (OH) is a distant second at the moment with 357 points while Fairmont State has 345 and Malone has 335.5.
Hillsdale's bid to defend as reigning combined meet conference champions was strengthened with over 100 points of separation between the Chargers and Findlay with 510.5 points.
Inside the C.T. Branin Natatorium, nine different event champions were crowned for their efforts.
Findlay's sophomore national champion Tim Stollings shattered the conference meet record and overall record in the 50 freestyle prelims with a time of 19.69 seconds. He couldn't quite match that pace in the finals, but still beat the field of finalists, including teammate Luca Chiandussi as runner-up, in the short sprint.
UF freshman Daniel Garcia performed the same feat in the 200 IM as the Oilers went 1-2-3 in the event finals with Adam Hornak and Marko Priednieks also securing some valuable team points.
Garcia clocked a 1:48.51 and officially passed former Tiffin standout Miguel Angel Garcia Arroyo, a previous conference freshman and swimmer of the year for the Dragons. UF freshman Kristofer "Dags" Bregis brought home his second individual title of the meet after winning the 1,000 frestyle on Tuesday.
Findlay's men and women also swept the 400 medley relays with impressive times combining the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle.
Hillsdale's Cecilia Guadalupi beat out fellow Great Midwest finalists for the 200 IM title in a time of 2:06.67. UNC Pembroke's NCAA qualifier Gillian Manning was also responsible for a new conference meet record in the 500 freestyle.
UNC Pembroke also celebrated a first-place finish in the women's 50 freestyle courtesy of Mariel Mencia Martinez with Hillsdale's Marie Taylor and Malone's Denise Quentin also in close contention.
After Dalton Shevlin won the men's 1-meter dive, teammate Leah Vander Roest followed with the 3-meter dive individual victory.
