Baseball Players of the Week (March 16)

3.16.21

INDIANAPOLIS – Hillsdale and Walsh earned new Great Midwest Athletic Conference Baseball Players of the Week selections as announced on Tuesday afternoon.

The league schedule officially started as defending conference champion Tiffin went 4-0 with a series sweep over Ohio Valley. Walsh was able to take three of four from Cedarville and there were some very evenly-matched battles in series between Ohio Dominican/Hillsdale and Findlay/Malone to salvage splits.

Player of the Week
Jeff Landis
Hillsdale
First Base
Freshman
Midland, MI (Midland HS)

Still just a freshman, Landis has what you call no-doubt light tower power from the left side of the batter's box. During a conference series split against Ohio Dominican at home, Landis was a one-man wrecking crew while hitting .500 (7-14) with two grand slams, a double and 11 RBI.

In one of the wildest box scores you'll ever see, Landis cleared the bases with two swings in the sixth and seventh innings to cap a Chargers' rally in an 18-14 win as the teams pounded out a combined 30 hits.

Landis displayed his pull power with towering blasts towards the storage garage out in right field, including one ball that hit the top of the roof. The corner infielder provided the highlight in a 7-run frame for the Hillsdale offense as his first round-tripper gave the Chargers a 10-5 lead.

Landis belted his second grand slam in the seventh inning after the Panthers trimmed the lead down to 11-8.

His 9 RBI in the game tied the conference record that he now shares with former Hillsdale slugger Steven Ring, who plated 9 against Kentucky Wesleyan in the spring of 2018. He went 5-for-6 at the plate in the Hillsdale win.

Landis was off to a blistering start in the COVID-shortened 2020 spring season through 18 plate appearances, batting .444 and leading the team in average at the time.

He is batting .410 this spring and is the current league leader in slugging percentage (.923), RBI (21), home runs (6), and also has a pair of sacrifice flies.

Pitcher of the Week
Brant Alazaus
Walsh
LHP
Junior
Alliance, OH (West Branch HS)

Alazaus had two turns through the rotation for the Cavaliers, picked No. 2 in the preseason coaches poll, and delivered a pair of victories on the mound.

The southpaw was tough to solve against California (PA) and in conference play against Cedarville as he finished with 14 strikeouts in 11 innings pitched with a 1.23 ERA.

Alazaus struck out eight Vulcan batters in his first start on Monday as he pitched six innings and gave up just one run on two hits.

In Walsh's third win of the series over Cedarville, the junior came through with six more punchouts against the Yellow Jackets. He went five frames and gave up just one earned run again while walking one.

Alazaus was also off to a blistering start in the spring of 2020. He had logged a 1.89 ERA through three starts and was 2-0 with 9.47 K/9 ratio.
