EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana and Angel Mounds Course will be host for Saturday’s NCAA Midwest Regional races that represent the next step of the postseason for three conferences and their affiliated programs.
The ultimate goal for everyone involved is a warmer weather destination for nationals in Florida following the completion of the women’s 6K and men’s 10K distance events that are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Central start times.
The top three teams in each race earn automatic bids into the NCAA II Championships, while the top two individuals not on advancing teams earn automatic bids. The top five individuals overall also earn automatic bids to the national meet, while the remaining teams and individuals will have to wait until Monday, Nov. 8, to find out if they have earned an at-large bid. That announcement will be released on NCAA.com.
A total of 34 teams will be selected for each gender to participate at nationals slated for Nov. 20 at The Abbey Course in Saint Leo.
The Great Midwest Athletic Conference has a strong chance to send teams/individuals to Saint Leo, Fla., for the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Last year’s version for the fall was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Temperatures are expected fall in the mid-40’s around race time, which is not out of the ordinary for an early November regional event.
Recently crowned Great Midwest Runners of the Year Noah Fisher (Findlay) and Alexa Leppelmeier (Walsh) are among the Midwest Region’s elite as they lead their respective teams into competition.
Conference women’s team champion Cedarville is ranked No. 14 nationally in the USTFCCCA Poll going into the regional. The Yellow Jackets are joined in the national rankings by No. 23 Walsh and four teams from the Great Midwest are regionally ranked with the addition of Hillsdale and Malone.
The Walsh men were also presented with a conference championship trophy recently in Cedarville and the Cavaliers received a bump up in the national rankings to No. 22 going into the weekend. Walsh and Cedarville are both regionally ranked along with future incoming member Northwood at No. 10.
Live results for Saturday's race can be accessed on GoUSIEagles.com. All tickets will be sold at the gate on race day. Tickets for adults are $10, while students are $5. Children, ages 2-and-under, are admitted free of charge.
