INDIANAPOLIS – Associate member powerhouses Mercyhurst and Seton Hill from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference received top 5 billing in the 2021 NIKE/US Lacrosse Preseason Poll leading up to the spring.
Mercyhurst is ranked third and Seton Hill fifth as both programs have been accustomed to an annual collision course meeting in the conference championship final.
COVID-19 canceled a March 14, 2020, meeting between both programs to start the conference schedule in the spring. SHU had one conference game under its belt while four other programs, including Mercyhurst, was waiting for its conference league contest.
Before the season was halted, Mercyhurst defeated No. 11 Wingate and No. 15 UIndy as part of a 5-0 start.
Seton Hill was on a similar charted path with a 6-0 start and a signature win carved out at No. 11 Mount Olive early in the non-conference schedule.
The conference will feature seven members in the sport this spring, two full members (Walsh, Lake Erie) and five associates including Alderson Broaddus and Davis & Elkins. Wheeling’s program is also back for competition after a one-year hiatus in 2020.
Seton Hill is scheduled to open the season at Chestnut Hill on Saturday, Feb. 27, while the schedule for Mercyhurst is still to be announced.
