9.22.20

INDIANAPOLIS – Following the completion of the ITA Regional event in Greenwood, Ind., Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week awards were announced on Tuesday afternoon.

UIndy hosted the Midwest Region event with Findlay, Hillsdale and Walsh, all competing from the Great Midwest in singles and doubles brackets.

The only other ITA Regional being conducted this fall is in the Southeast Region on Oct. 1-4 with Belmont Abbey serving as host.

Men’s Athlete of the Week
Soh Kuyama
Findlay
Sophomore
Findlay, Ohio (Findlay HS)

Kuyama navigated his way through the singles bracket and emerged as the ITA Midwest Region champion as he went 5-0 in a three-day span at Center Grove High School.

A mixture of G-MAC and Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) institutions were in the field including Southern Indiana, host UIndy and Illinois Springfield and William Jewell.

Kuyama won in straight sets in the championship match vs. UIndy’s Renato Lima, 6-4, 6-4.

After a first-round bye, the homegrown Findlay sophomore toppled another Greyhound, Max Witthaus, 6-1, 6-3. He advanced and rallied back to eliminate UIndy’s Tom Zeuch in the subsequent round.

The next domino to fall was UIndy’s Yoann Viel and Kuyama defeated him by another straight set score, this time 6-3, 6-2.

In the semifinals, Kuyama was victorious vs. UIS’ Manno Servaes by a 6-3, 7-5, final to advance into Monday’s championship final.

This is Kuyama’s second conference athlete of the week award after winning as a freshman back on March 11 of 2020.

Women’s Athlete of the Week
Hannah Cimpeanu
Hillsdale
Junior
Troy, MI (Troy HS)

The overall composition of singles and doubles work for the Hillsdale junior was impressive as the Chargers competed at the ITA Midwest Regional.

Cimpeanu recorded one singles win and was part of two doubles victories in a three-day span during the Chargers’ official fall season debut.

Cimpeanu and teammate sophomore Sarah Hackman combined to defeat a pair of familiar opponents from Walsh and Findlay in the doubles bracket. They advanced by identical 8-6 scores before falling to the eventual championship pairing from UIndy.

In singles action, Cimpeanu defeated Walsh’s Katarina Raszum, 6-1, 5-7, 16-14, before meeting UIndy’s Sahra Bouchalla in the next round.

Cimpeanu has now been named conference athlete of the week four different times throughout her career.

Hillsdale will host its own invitational to close out the fall and prepare for the spring season on October 3.
