Tiffin 4th in Division II, Named WBCA Academic Top 25

8.11.20

ATLANTA - The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced the 2019-20 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Rolls as of Tuesday.

The WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and two-year GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2019-20 season is the 25th in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.

The Tiffin University women’s basketball team tied for fourth in the NCAA Division II rankings, with a team GPA of 3.779.

The Dragons, led by third year Head Coach Jessie Ivey, have improved their overall record each of the previous two years. Last season, her team qualified for the conference tournament for the first time since 2012.

Aarion Nichols paced the Dragons, ranking top 12 in the conference in points (14.5), rebounds (7.6), assists (3.3) and steals (1.6) per contest. She was named All-Conference Second Team and earned Great Midwest Player of the Week honors following the upset of 17th-ranked Kentucky Wesleyan to clinch a playoff spot.

Seton Hill secured the top spot in the NCAA Division II list, with a team GPA of 3.831. Ashland, who will be joining the Great Midwest in 2021-22, ranked second on the list with a team GPA of 3.802.

A team’s GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0) earned by the total number of academic hours attempted by all team members in the academic terms (semesters or quarters) that the season spans. Weighted grades are converted to a 4.0 scale. The GPAs are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point. Teams are nominated for the honor by the WBCA member head coach. A team must have a 3.000 or better GPA to be nominated.
