NORTH CANTON, Ohio – In a repeat of last year’s championship, Walsh demonstrated that it is tough to knock off the No. 1 seed when tournament time rolls around.
Walsh dismantled opponents in the three-game series of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball playoffs, as they clinched the title.
The Cavaliers length and speed continued to disrupt opponents on the defensive end, as the home team defeated No. 2 Kentucky Wesleyan, 81-58. It ended up being a perfect day for the Walsh Cavaliers, as they men’s program also completed a back-to-back championship.
Kate Bruce’s program will enter the field of 64 as an automatic qualifier in the NCAA Championship Midwest Regional. The Cavaliers head into the extended post-season on a 23-game win streak.
The season is not over for KWC, as they remain ranked in the region and will have a shot at an at-large bid. The NCAA Championship selection show will air Sunday night at 10 p.m. ET, with three automatic qualifiers and five at-large picks from the Midwest Region.
Walsh couldn’t seem to miss early on pouring in 31 first quarter points, but KWC answered in the second quarter with 21 of their own. The Cavaliers led 45-31 at the half.
The defensive efforts of Walsh held KWC to only 27 second-half points and defense would prove to be the deciding factor, as both teams shot the ball below their averages.
Great Midwest Player of the Year Sha Carter led all scorers with 21 points (8-16) and was just-shy of a double-double with nine boards. Mayci Sales dominated the glass with a 14-point, 13 rebound double-double.
Tahlia Walton caused problems for the Cavalier defense inside as she scored a team-best 20 points for KWC.
