CANTON, Ohio – The third edition of the Great Midwest/Mountain East Conference Swimming & Diving Championships starts Wednesday morning at the C.T. Branin Natatorium for four days of competition hosted by Malone University.
The field has expanded for the 2020 combined championship format with 10 teams entered in men’s races and 13 different programs competing towards the women’s standings.
Student-athletes will take aim at meet records and compete for prized hardware with all-conference recognition through a series of preliminaries and finals races. Preliminary action starts in the morning on Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET; the first finals session would begin that evening at 6 p.m.
Individually or through relays, swimmers will undoubtedly bring their best to the table once again as they continue to potentially qualify for nationals.
The Great Midwest and Mountain East will be streaming the event in its entirety through each league’s respective video portal. The Great Midwest Digital Network will be utilized by Malone with live results available through the Pioneers’ website.

The Great Midwest will field three teams in the men’s scoring, Findlay, Malone and Tiffin, while six programs are in the women’s races, additionally including Alderson Broaddus, Hillsdale and Ursuline.
Findlay’s Katy Kouvaris set a pair of championship meet records last year in both the 100 and 200 butterfly. She contributed to her third meet record as a part of the winning 200 medley relay and the Oilers had another record in the 800 freestyle relay.
The Findlay women claimed the combined meet team title for the second consecutive year and are looking to make it three straight this week. Hillsdale’s Katherine Heeres will attempt to defend her 200 backstroke title and Malone’s Kaila Butterworth and Denise Quentin were also individual event winners.
Reigning women's coach of the year Kurt Kirner has a two-time winner of athlete of the week honors in his arsenal, conference 1,000 freestyle record holder Leah Tunney. Tunney is just a freshman and has two top 10 times in the 500 freestyle, three in the 1,000 freestyle and a top 10 in the 1,650 freestyle.
All-American Hanna Cederholm has been dominant the past two seasons with eight event wins in the championship meet and as a three-time winner of athlete of the week in 2019-20 with several “B” standards met, is a favorite to dethrone Fairmont State’s Courtney Deem as a two-time female swimmer of the meet.
While the women’s records were more stubborn to go down in 2019, the men took down a total of nine meet records.
Tiffin’s Jordan Wright has been a two-time selection as the conference athlete of the week on the diving platform after qualifying for nationals twice. Findlay’s Tim Stollings, a favorite for conference freshman of the meet, has put himself into the same company as former UF All-American Janko Radmanovic in the 100 butterfly.
Sophomore Oiler Paul Pavala shattered the overall conference record in the 200 backstroke at the Calvin Winter Invitational. Reigning Male Swimmer of the Meet Miguel Angel Garcia Arroyo of Tiffin returns to the pool after winning five events as a rookie and sweeping the freshman of the meet hardware.
Tiffin’s meet record-breaking 400 freestyle relay unit is also intact for defending coach of the year Lukas Jachno. Christoph Hohenfeld is also back in the mix as the defending 100 breaststroke victor.
