INDIANAPOLIS – With the combined conference championship meet at Malone about two weeks away, Great Midwest Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week awards were announced for Tiffin and Hillsdale on Wednesday.
On Feb. 12-15, the C.T. Branin Natatorium will house the 2020 G-MAC/Mountain East Conference Championships for the third straight year. New to the mix this year will be UNC-Pembroke and Frostburg State for the Mountain East.
Findlay’s men’s and women’s programs have captured the overall team titles for both years of the event.
Men’s Athlete of the Week
Jordan Wright
Tiffin
Diving
Sophomore
Newburgh, IN (Castle HS)
Wright went back-to-back for conference weekly honors off the diving board as he virtually mirrored his NCAA-qualifying effort vs. Urbana as the Dragons beat Ashland at home, 59-53.
The sophomore was victorious in both the 1 and 3-meter platforms while qualifying for nationals for the second week in a row.
This time, Wright had a point total of 292.70, less than two points from his season-best 293.75 in the 1-meter height.
Wright also added points to the team total by winning the 3-meter dive with a final score of 284.95.
Women’s Athlete of the Week
Leah Tunney
Hillsdale
Backstroke/Middle Distance
Freshman
Mequon, WI (Homestead HS)
Tunney was the season’s first athlete of the week and as a rookie, added her second weekly award of 2019-20 to her freshman resume for the Chargers as they competed against Ohio Northern and Case Western.
Tunney won a pair of individual events and finished runner-up in two other races as Hillsdale continues to gear up for the G-MAC/MEC Championships.
Tunney touched the wall first in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:36.74, which ranks seventh in combined conference history.
Tunney also puts her 1,000 freestyle times right into elite company with Fairmont State’s Courtney Deem, the G-MAC/MEC Women’s Swimmer of the Meet for the past two seasons.
She also has two of the league’s best times already in the 200 backstroke. Tunney won the event with a time of 2:06.97 and also contributed to a second-place performance in the 200 freestyle relay.
