MINNEAPOLIS – Randy was ready.
Two days after getting the call to The Show, former Alderson Broaddus pitcher Randy Dobnak realized his big league dream by making his debut with the Minnesota Twins on Friday night at Target Field.
Dobnak hurled four scoreless innings in relief against the Cleveland Indians as the two squads battled it out for the American League Central lead.
Wearing #68 with his white Oakleys and conversation-starting mustache, Dobnak recorded three strikeouts and scattered six hits while turning through the Indians dangerous lineup.
It was a memorable night with plenty of firsts for the former Battler who started the year in Class A Advanced Fort Myers and beat the considerable odds as an undrafted free agent.
Dobnak’s first career pitch was tossed away into the dugout by his battery mate Jason Castro. His first career strikeout was against Roberto Perez. His first double play induced was against leadoff hitter and perennial all-star Francisco Lindor.
Dobnak went through Fort Myers and was promoted to Double-A Pensacola before getting shuttled back and forth to Triple-A Rochester.
As the July 31 trade deadline passed, Dobnak’s numbers over the past 10 games with a 2.00 ERA were just too good for the front office to ignore as he became the first Great Midwest Athletic Conference alum to make the 25-man roster.
Dobnak came in for the sixth inning with the Twins trailing 6-1. He threw 68 pitches, including 46 for strikes.
His parents, Rick and Jodi, were also in the stands as they were interviewed by FOX Sports North from the stands.
Dobnak positioned himself for another appearance in the club’s upcoming series against either the Milwaukee Brewers or Texas Rangers.
