INDIANAPOLIS – A league tournament trophy resulted in Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Lacrosse Players of the Week honors going to Findlay to close the regular season on Tuesday.

The Oilers, seeded second in this year’s Great Midwest Championship, edged out top seed Tiffin in a thrilling 9-8 finish on Saturday.

Brie Caruso was responsible for the game-winning shot as the Oilers finished strong in the second half to avenge a regular-season defeat to the Dragons.

Offensive Player of the Week
Brie Caruso
Findlay
Attack
Senior
Salisbury, MD (Wicomico HS)

Caruso was an offensive force to be reckoned with as she proved to be a matchup nightmare against Walsh and Tiffin in the conference playoffs.

Caruso had eight points in the Findlay semifinal victory over the Cavaliers, netting six goals and a pair of assists. She was also credited with one ground ball.

Now a two-time all-conference performer (second team as a junior, first team a senior), Caruso played a key role in driving the Oilers to conference glory.

Caruso put home the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal against Tiffin late in the second half for the eventual 9-8 Findlay win.

Caruso also came through in the clutch right before halftime, scoring as time expired to keep Findlay within striking distance down 6-4.

The senior found a gap in the defense and darted in with a quick flick of the wrist with 3:34 left on the clock. The Oilers defense took over from there and kept the Dragons off the scoreboard as they tried to rally back.

Defensive Player of the Week
Brittany Stephens
Findlay
Defense
Junior
Owen Sound, Ontario (West Hill)

Stephens has been the catalyst for the Oilers defensive attack, which leads the league in caused turnovers per game at 10.65.

Stephens, who was also a first team all-conference pick, has recorded 49 ground balls and caused 23 turnovers for the Oilers in 2019.

Stephens had a tough task at hand to be Great Midwest Offensive Player of the Year Elle Hamilton’s personal shadow in the championship game against Tiffin.

In the title game, Stephens caused three turnovers and collected a pair of ground balls.

In the 18-7 semifinal victory vs. Walsh, Stephens also picked up two ground balls as the Oilers limited the Walsh offense to just 20 shots overall.
