INDIANAPOLIS – Great Midwest Athletic Conference baseball champion Tiffin is headed to Ashland in the field of 56 teams to make up the NCAA Championship bracket that was announced Sunday night.
The Dragons (24-29) are fresh off a perfect playoff run at the Great Midwest Championship, beating Kentucky Wesleyan 9-6 on Saturday.
Tiffin’s 4-0 record as a No. 7 seed at Prasco Park resulted in automatic qualification as the league’s representative, one of 23 AQ’s distributed in the national tournament bracket.
Tiffin was seeded eighth in the Midwest Regional 1 pod and will face top seed and region host Ashland on Thursday, May 16. The double-elimination format would pit the winner against either No. 4 Northwood or No. 5 Bellarmine on Friday.
The Midwest Regional 2 pod in Springfield, Ill., will feature the No. 2 seed UIS Prairie Stars vs. No. 7 Drury and No. 3 Wayne State (MI) meeting No. 6 Quincy.
This is Tiffin’s first year as a conference member institution and the Dragons have had their share of championship success with men’s soccer, men’s tennis, and both indoor / outdoor track and field for men and women, all securing Great Midwest tournament trophies.
The championship provides for eight regional sites hosting three teams and eight regional sites hosting four teams, for a total of 16 regional sites. All regionals are double-elimination tournaments and will be played May 16-18. Regional winners will advance to the best-of-three super-regional competition May 24-25. Super Regional winners will advance to the double-elimination championship finals June 1-8 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The finals will be hosted by the University of Mount Olive and the town of Cary, North Carolina.
