Baseball Players of the Week (March 19)

3.19.19

INDIANAPOLIS – Some reshuffling of opening weekend for the league schedule allowed teams to complete their first series as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Baseball Players of the Week were announced on Tuesday.

Divisions are no longer part of the equation and the three-game series has been converted to a four-game series format for 2019.

Some teams started their conference season in snow flurries but the race to play for Prasco Park for the conference tournament is officially underway.

Ohio Dominican and Trevecca Nazarene both pulled off series sweeps against their respective opponents while defending champ Hillsdale started out 3-1 out of the gates.

Multiple teams are clumped together at 2-2 with plenty of time to establish themselves as conference contenders.

Player of the Week
Javier Lopez
Trevecca Nazarene
C/1B/OF
Senior
Lawrenceville, GA (Atlanta Christian HS/So. Union School)

Lopez has one of the more intriguing bloodlines in the sport with his father being none other than former Atlanta Braves catcher Javy Lopez, the star backstop who called the signals for Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Steve Avery and John Smoltz.

Lopez made his mark with a monster series as the Trojans swept Malone with four multi-hit games and six extra-base hits.

The sophomore batted .588 while going 10-for-17 at the plate. He legged out four doubles and clobbered a pair of home runs against a talented Pioneers’ pitching staff.

He had eight RBI, scored nine runs and walked once.

Lopez homered in back-to-back games of Friday’s doubleheader to start the series and had five RBI in game two alone. The Trojans generated 25 runs of offense on Saturday and Lopez doubled twice with two more RBI and three runs scored in the series finale.

Lopez is currently the league leader in hits with 31 and total bases with 44. Among qualified hitters he is third in batting average (.388) and now has eight extra-base hits with 12 RBI in 18 games played.

Pitcher of the Week
Mitchell Bault
Ohio Dominican
RHP
Senior
Maineville, OH (Archbishop Moeller HS)

In a four-game sweep against Tiffin, Bault did his part with a dominant outing on the mound to stymie the Dragons in a 6-0 final.

Bault fanned 10 over eight scoreless innings and gave up just two hits for his second winning decision of the spring. The Panthers bats picked up the senior right with five runs of support in the fifth inning.

Bault already has the league’s best strikeout total this season in a single game with 11 vs. Urbana. This is Bault’s second pitcher of the week selection in 2019 and fifth of his career since ODU joined the Great Midwest.

Bault is now 2-2 with a 2.76 ERA over five starts this year. He has 36 strikeouts in 29.1 IP for an impressive 11.05 K/9 ratio.

His 36 punchouts also leads the conference so far this season and he has only walked four hitters.
