SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury is host to the eight best teams in the Midwest as the NCAA Championship Regional starting on Friday in The O’Reilly Family Event Center.
Two Great Midwest Athletic Conference programs are in the field, an automatic qualifier and an at-large selection with Walsh as the No. 7 seed and Kentucky Wesleyan as the No. 8 seed.
Walsh takes on No. 7 Lewis from the Great Lakes Valley Conference at 2:30 p.m. CT. before Kentucky Wesleyan goes up against the top seed in the bracket, Drury, at 6 p.m.
No. 3 Grand Valley State vs. No. 6 Truman State is also at noon and No. 4 Ashland will square off against No. 5 Northern Michigan in other quarterfinal action for the Midwest Regional.
Walsh was the Great Midwest tournament champion after going 3-0 as the top seed and host of the semifinals/final. The Cavaliers are winners of 12 straight getting ready to face the Flyers with an overall record of 25-6.
With the AQ and tourney title, Walsh separated itself from the pack of three co-regular season champions in the league with KWC and Cedarville.
The Cavaliers had a pair of first team all-conference selections with freshman Sha Carter and sophomore Mayci Sales on the list. Carter was recently named to the D2CCA All-Midwest Region Second Team after finishing second in the conference in scoring as a rookie (16.9 ppg).
Lewis is 26-4 and D2CCA Midwest Region Player of the Year Jessica Kelliher is the Flyers’ big gun in the post.
Kentucky Wesleyan was ranked in each release of the Midwest Region rankings, earning the national committee’s nod for an at-large selection after falling in the conference tournament final.
Earlier this year, the Panthers ripped off a 15-game win streak and are currently 24-7 getting ready for a tough opening-round test against undefeated Drury. KWC was highlighted on the first team all-conference roster this year by forward Keelie Lamb and sharpshooter Jenna Martin.
It’s a rematch of the Panthers vs. Panthers after Drury beat KWC in Nashville on Nov. 9. Drury will put its 31-0 record on the line but will be without the services of two key players sitting out with one-game suspension stemming from the GLVC title match against Bellarmine.
The Midwest Regional semifinals will be on Saturday and the region championship game will be played on Monday.
All regional tournament games will be streamed live on the GLVC Sports Network.
