Men’s Lacrosse Players of the Week (March 12)

INDIANAPOLIS – No. 13 Mercyhurst received both selections for Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Lacrosse Players of the Week awards that continued on Tuesday. 
 
The new USILA rankings have Seton Hill topping the Great Midwest schools at No. 9 with Mercyhurst close at No. 13.
 
The G-MAC/ECC Men’s Lacrosse Challenge Cup continued over the weekend as No. 3-ranked Mercy defeated Lake Erie by one goal. The ECC has a 2-0 lead in the inaugural standings after District of Columbia also beat Davis & Elkins.

Smith-Wilcox stood out in the box score with a team-high six points as Mercyhurst defeated Molloy at home in Erie, Pa.
 
The junior had three goals and three assists while taking just five shots. He was also credited with one ground ball. 
 
He scored and assisted another Lakers goal in the first period as the Mercyhurst raced out to a 5-1 lead. He did the same in the second period with one of each for an 8-1 lead for the Lakers at halftime. 
 
The decision was well in hand for Mercyhurst as the game wore on and Smith-Wilcox added another goal and assist in the fourth period. 
 
Smith-Wilcox is second on the team in scoring with 15 points only trailing 2018 Great Midwest Freshman of the Year Devin Pipher (19 pts). 
 
Defensive Player of the Week
James Rettinger
Mercyhurst
Midfield
Sophomore
Manlius, NY (Fayetteville-Manlius HS)
 
Rettinger helped the Lakers defense lock down Molloy to the tune of just 30 shots taken during the win. 
 
Rettinger collected five ground balls and forced a pair of turnovers. He also added an assist and fired off two shots. 
 
Mercyhurst only allowed one goal in the opening period and pitched shutouts in the second and fourth periods. 
 
Rettinger has played in all four games for the Lakers this spring and has eight ground balls and four caused turnovers.
