INDIANAPOLIS– Teams are getting ready for their Spring Break trips as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s & Women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week honors continued into Week 8 of the 2018-19 season.
Men’s Athlete of the Week
Tomas Kmetko
Findlay
Kmetko was a new roster addition for the Oilers at the turn of the calendar year and has immediately manned the No. 1 singles spot in the lineup.
Kmetko and the Oilers defeated Lake Superior State for a regional win in their lone matchup of the week.
Kmetko has drawn tough opponents since joining UF from Wayne State and Ashland, but won in straight sets and combined with Jorge Barnuevo to help get his team the doubles point.
Women’s Athlete of the Week
Clara Drasch
Walsh
Sophomore
Winzer, Germany
Drasch more than held her own against tough Midwest Region competition as Walsh beat Lewis and battled Grand Valley State.
Drasch won the No. 3 singles battle against GVSU’s Marija Leko for the Cavaliers lone point in a 6-1 loss.
She and teammate Mercedes Fernandez took their No. 2 doubles foes down to the wire in a 7-6 finish that included a 4-0 tiebreaker in favor of the Lakers.
In the win against Lewis, Drasch won again in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 over Alek Sredojevic. This time, she was on the better side of a tiebreak finish in doubles with Fernandez, a 7-6 (7-4) win.
Drasch is now 5-2 on the year primarily playing No. 3 or No. 4 singles in head coach Bryan Whittaker’s rotation.
