INDIANAPOLIS – Weather permitting, more teams around the league were able to squeeze in a few non-conference matches on the courts as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week honors were released Wednesday.
Men’s Athlete of the Week
Julien Clouette
Hillsdale
Junior
Varennes, Quebec (College Francais)
The Chargers have an argument to be included in the discussion among the top teams in the Midwest Region and the ITA National Rankings with an undefeated start to 2018-19.
Now at 5-0, Hillsdale’s resume was enhanced with dual wins over Purdue Northwest (W, 5-2) and No. 22-ranked Ferris State (W, 4-3).
Clouette was a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles competition against both opponents to help lead HC to the victories. He manned the No. 5 singles slot and defeated PNW’s Mauricio Villacres, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, he contributed to the team point as the Chargers No. 1 and No. 3 pairings each won.
Against Ferris State, he delivered more of the same results with a straight set win in singles and another doubles victory with partner Brian Hackman.
Women’s Athlete of the Week
Hannah Cimpeanu
Hillsdale
Sophomore
Troy, MI (Troy HS)
Cimpeanu and the Chargers women’s squad helped complete the tennis program sweep against Ferris State with the men. HC pitched a 7-0 shutout against its former conference foe from the GLIAC.
Hillsdale improved to 2-0 on the season while Cimpeanu is settling in nicely as Nikki Walbright’s No. 1 option in singles.
Cimpeanu, the reigning Great Midwest Freshman of the Year, toppled her first opponent of the year against Davenport.
She defeated Ferris State’s No. 1 player, Patricia Gomez, 6-2, 6-2, and worked to help get Hillsdale a doubles point and complete the team shutout.
