CANTON, Ohio – For four days, student-athletes from two leagues will put their talents on display at the C.T. Branin Natatorium as Malone University hosts the 2019 Great Midwest/Mountain East Swimming & Diving Championships starting Wednesday.
For the second straight year, the co-op joint effort by the two conferences will feature men’s and women’s programs competing for respective league honors and a team championship trophy.
Twelve different sessions will be conducted over the four days with prelims, diving and individual/relay event finals celebrating the achievements of student-athletes.
Findlay carries the mantle as the defending champion for both the men’s and women’s team titles from the inaugural event in 2018.
The Oilers will look to repeat their dominance after winning 33 combined events last year with two individuals supplying six first-place finishes.
Seven total different teams will represent the Great Midwest (Alderson Broaddus, Davis & Elkins, Findlay, Hillsdale, Malone, Tiffin, Ursuline) while four schools are competing from the Mountain East (Fairmont State, Notre Dame, Urbana and West Virginia Wesleyan).
Conference meet records will fall from both genders in the pool with many familiar faces, including athletes of the week from the current season, returning.
Senior NCAA All-American Amanda Stiegal from Findlay was one student-athlete who pocketed six first-place medals in 2018. She is among the favorites to try and compete for female athlete of the meet honors along with Fairmont State’s reigning award winner Courtney Deem.
Also keep an eye on Great Midwest Female Swimmer of the Year Hanna Cederholm, who owns combined conference records in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM. Oilers’ newcomers Kendra Polewski and Christina McFarland have had sensational rookie seasons for head coach Andrew Makepeace.
Hillsdale’s senior standout Anika Ellingson has dominated her share of breaststroke races and she looks to become the Chargers’ first G-MAC/MEC champion after finishing runner-up a year ago.
The graduation of Janko Radmanovic and Ben Rath have paved the way for some new men’s swimmers to try and grab their share of the spotlight. Tiffin freshman Miguel Garcia Arroyo already has conference records in the 200 backstroke and 400 IM and teammate Jonah Sumfleth is just as versatile with a record in the 100 backstroke.
The Oilers’ relay units will look a little bit different but both Trent Williams and Mark Billeaud had more than a fair amount of time up at the podium in first place. Trae Gulgin and Issac Stretch are also returning conference champs in both individual and relay events.
Returning conference champions on the platform for 1 and 3-meter diving include Findlay’s Hannah May and Alicia Solis. Dalton Shevlin is the men’s returning diving champ in both heights.
