INDIANAPOLIS – Opening day came for a handful of teams around the league as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Baseball Players of the Week recognition officially started on Tuesday for a pitcher and player.
Divisions are not part of the conference standings this spring in the Great Midwest as 13 teams try to advance into the postseason at PRASCO Park in Mason, Ohio.
Baseball Player of the Week
Cam Curry
Kentucky Wesleyan
OF/P
Senior
Columbus, IN (St. Joseph’s College)
Curry hit for the cycle in the combined series against Coker as the Panthers split a four-game set to open the spring in South Carolina.
The senior hit .500 from the plate in 16 at-bats with four extra-base hits, including two doubles, a triple and a home run.
He drove in seven and scored five runs to help KWC score 25 runs combined in the two Panthers’ wins.
In just his third at-bat of the season, Curry drove in a run with an RBI double in the fifth inning. In his next plate appearance in the sixth inning, he crushed a two-run bomb as Kentucky Wesleyan pounded out 22 hits.
In the 8-0 KWC win, Curry delivered a two-run double in the top of the first inning as part of a four-run frame from the Panthers.
Curry’s arm and bat was a big reason why the Panthers were in the Great Midwest Championship series against Hillsdale to finish out 2018.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Davis Jackson
Trevecca
RHP
Freshman
Spring Hill, TN (Summit HS)
The Trevecca freshman Jackson helped the Trojans complete a three-game sweep of Montevallo on opening weekend with seven shutout innings in his first career start.
In the nightcap of the Trojans doubleheader against the Falcons, Jackson struck out seven, by only allowing a single hit to help the Trojans improve to 3-0 on the season.
Before Jackson took the mound in the first, the Trojans built him a 5-0 lead, led by Dalton Mauldin’s two-RBI single and RBI singles from Javier Lopez and Trey Vanderpool.
Carson McClure and Hunter Davis combined for two innings of relief and surrendered just a single hit between them, striking out two in the win.
Trevecca has now won four consecutive games against Montevallo and plays host to Lewis University in regional action for a three-game series this weekend.
