Walsh Women Punch Ticket as Team to Nationals

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –
The nationally-ranked women’s program from Walsh officially qualified for nationals after earning its way automatically by virtue of placement at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday.
 
The Cavaliers are headed to the national stage for the third consecutive year as a Great Midwest Athletic Conference member institution.
 
Walsh will pack its bags and fly out to Sacramento, Calif., for the NCAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 23. The Cavaliers’ women finished third out of the entire field in the 6K team standings.
 
The Midwest Region was absolutely stacked with nine nationally-ranked programs, including three from the Great Midwest (Hillsdale, Walsh, Cedarville) all competing.
 
Walsh edged out No. 9-ranked Hillsdale, the recent Great Midwest team champions, for the final AQ by the closest of margins, 155 to 156.
 
Hillsdale’s Joseph Humes also earned his way to California as an individual selection by finishing fourth overall in the men’s 10K distance. The senior Great Midwest Runner of the Year clocked the fourth-fastest time in conference history with a 31:24.50.
 
Humes was an NCAA All-American as a junior competing individually and finished fourth in the Midwest Regional out of 208 total runners.
 
The Walsh men are officially in really good position to receive one of the at-large team selections with a fourth-place team finish. The Cavaliers went into the race ranked No. 22 in the country.
 
For Walsh, Noah Murray, Drew Roberts and Jacob Caniford, all continued their strong postseason with top-25 positioning. They all received USTFCCA All-Midwest Region Team status along with Malone junior and all-conference runner Zach Fresenko.
 
Finishing as the top finisher for the women from the Great Midwest was Malone senior all-conference standout Hannah Thompson, a redshirt senior. Thompson earned all-region honors along with Hillsdale’s Arena Lewis and 2019 Great Midwest Runner of the Year Mackenna Curtis-Collins.
 
Also securing all-region status from nationally-qualifying Walsh was Claire Robertson and Andra Lehotay with top-25 finishes.
 
A total of 200 men from 80 different programs and 200 women from 95 different programs earned the distinction of USTFCCCA All-Region Team by virtue of a top-25 of the field at one of the eight regional sites this past weekend.
 
Only student-athletes from USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for this honor.
