NDIANAPOLIS – Reigning Great Midwest Athletic Conference champion Lake Erie is generating some national buzz by being ranked in the NIKE/US Lacrosse Magazine Division II Women’s Top 20.
The Storm will head into the 2019 campaign ranked 19th and presumably should be the league’s preseason coaches poll favorite when the balloting is completed.
Lake Erie held positioning in the Midwest Region rankings at No. 4 to close the regular season and a bubble team for the NCAA Championship field in 2018, its first season as a Great Midwest member.
The Storm swept individual all-conference honors last spring with Great Midwest Offensive Player of the Year (Anna Spin), Defensive Player of the Year (Cecilia Spin), Freshman of the Year (Riley Heffron) and Coach of the Year (Mallory Ferrandiz).
Both Spin sisters and Taylor Mathis went on to be IWLCA All-Midwest Region Team selections as well.
Lake Erie defeated Findlay in the conference championship final and finished 16-2 overall, including a perfect run through the conference schedule with 12 wins in as many games. The Storm go into 2019 on a 16-game win streak.
LEC also captured its first Great Midwest regular-season trophy as well as four teams in the league made the postseason.
New conference member Tiffin finished the 2018 season being ranked No. 24 in the IWLCA National Poll. LEC was also tabbed as a nationally-ranked team by the IWLCA.
