INDIANAPOLIS – Several programs transitioned into dual action in the fall season as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s & Women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week were announced Tuesday afternoon.
In men’s action over the past week alone Findlay beat Ohio Northern, Hillsdale triumphed over Indiana Tech and Cedarville toppled Taylor. Walsh also played against Wooster and Kentucky Wesleyan faced Indiana-East.
The women had a lighter schedule on tap with Cedarville taking on Otterbein, Capital and Taylor in a five-day stretch while Davis & Elkins contested in-state foe Charleston. Kentucky Wesleyan also played Indiana-East with the men.
Men’s Athlete of the Week
Charlie Adams
Hillsdale
Junior
Knoxville, TN (Bearden HS)
Adams continues to flourish in the No. 1 position for the defending conference champion Chargers, who beat Indiana Tech 5-2 to start 2018-19.
Adams was one of three Chargers to be voted on the all-conference first team a year ago as he finished with a 15-4 record in singles action and was 16-4 in doubles competition.
Adams was the lone No. 1 around the league to win both his singles and doubles matches over the past week.
He won in straight sets over Tiago Neves, 6-3, 6-1, and finished a Hillsdale doubles sweep with Justin Hyman with a 6-3 decision over Neves and Alvaro Gomez.
This is Adams’ fourth selection in less than two years for weekly conference men’s tennis honors.
Women’s Athlete of the Week
Liana English
Cedarville
Sophomore
Morgantown, WV (Homeschool)
English was a second team all-conference selection as a freshman last season. She helped the Yellow Jackets to another dual win over Capital in the shortened fall season.
English emerged from the three-match stretch with two wins in singles action and one more in doubles play.
She earned her first dual victory of the season against Otterbein in straight sets against Sydney Bergman, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. English also played doubles with her sister, Janelle.
Versus Capital in an 8-1 Yellow Jackets’ win, English did her part by winning singles and doubles, both at the No. 1 slot. She won in straight sets again in singles and teamed up with Rosie Thompson for the doubles point.
