Volleyball Players of the Week (Sept. 24)

9.24.18

INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time this season, Ursuline and Tiffin were represented in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Players of the Week awards for the East and West divisions.

Malone and Walsh have moved into a first-place tie in the East while Tiffin’s red-hot streak was sustained with three more wins to have solo possession of first locked down in the West for the moment.

Tiffin and Hillsdale are the only teams left unbeaten in conference play and the two programs will collide later this week.

East Division Player of the Week
Katelyn Selleny
Ursuline
Setter
Senior
Concord Township, OH (Riverside HS)

Selleny reached a career milestone in a thrilling five-set finish as the Arrows triumphed over East Division leader Lake Erie.

She served up 50 assists and had 11 digs to hand LEC a rare divisional defeat and the Arrows picked up their fifth win of the season.

In the process, Selleny recorded career assist No. 3,000, one of just two players in Great Midwest history to do so, as she continues to climb the record books.

Selleny is ranked second all-time among all Great Midwest players since 2012 in career assists with 3,001. Cedarville’s Kristin Cardwell has 3,409 to sit in first place, but the Arrows’ senior setter has the former Yellow Jacket in her sights.

In a league full of strong setters across both divisions, Selleny is among the best averaging 10.16 per set. She currently ranks fourth and is also top 10 in service aces on the season.

West Division Player of the Week
Jenna Huffman
Tiffin
Middle Blocker
Junior
McComb, OH (McComb HS)

The Dragons are breathing their fire as winners of 11 straight and currently stand as leaders in the crowded West Division.

Now at 13-3 in the program’s first year with the Great Midwest, Tiffin extended an impressive win streak that began on August 31. To complete a perfect month of September, the Dragons will be tested this week against last year’s co-division champs Findlay (at home) and Hillsdale (away).

Huffman was spectacular on the floor in the wins against Walsh, Ohio Dominican and Ohio Valley, as Tiffin swept all three contests in straight sets.

Among all players in the league for the past week, she was second in hitting percentage (.565), tied for third in kills (4.11 per set) first in blocks (2.11) and first in points (5.61 per set).

Huffman locked down the middle with 37 kills and just two errors on 62 attack attempts. She also averaged 2.22 digs per game.

Eight of Huffman’s 19 blocks from the past week were in solo fashion and she also added a pair of service aces.

Huffman is a big reason why the Dragons are among the league’s best up front, ranking second in opponent hitting percentage and blocks. She is the current league leader in blocks and is top 10 in hitting percentage (3rd), points (3rd) and kills (10th).
