INDIANAPOLIS – Malone and Davis & Elkins garnered recognition for Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Athletes of the Week as announced on Tuesday morning.

Teams forged through inclement weather conditions over the weekend with varying distances while still rounding into midseason form to get to the traditional 6K, 8K and 10K races later in the year.

Senior
Toledo, OH (Toledo Central Catholic HS)

Malone’s men and women competed at the 4-mile Tommy Evans Invitational hosted by Akron, a somewhat unconventional distance that measures out to just under 6.5 kilometers.

McCartney gathered in his fourth career conference weekly honor with a sterling performance that resulted in a third-place finish with a time of 19:56.20.

The Pioneers also impressed as a team, finishing runner-up in the field while beating Division I opponents Kent State and host Akron.

McCartney was just a shade over six seconds off the winning pace set by Clark Bookman of Kent State.

Women’s Athlete of the Week
Danielle Haynes
Davis & Elkins
Senior
Berkley Springs, WV (Berkley Springs HS)

As is the case with most of the West Virginia landscape, Haynes ran through rugged terrain in the hills at the 4K Golden Bear Invitational hosted by West Virginia Tech.

Haynes earned her second conference career weekly honor with a runner-up placing in a time of 15:34.30, an average of 6:15.90 per mile.

Haynes guided the Senators to a third-place finish as a team and was less than one second off the winning time by Bailey Knowles of Concord.

Haynes is a senior leader for the rising D&E women’s cross country program, which was picked in the top half (sixth) of the preseason coaches poll.
