INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Baseball Players of the Week for the South Division were announced on Tuesday, the eve before the playoffs start for the eight-team bracket.
The top three seeds from the South Division, regular-season champion Kentucky Wesleyan, Trevecca and Ohio Valley, winners of a dramatic walk-off home run on Monday, will be represented in the conference tourney.
The conference tournament will be conducted starting on Wednesday at noon ET with Legacy Field and PRASCO Park both being in play.
Admission to the tournament is free and the conference is back at PRASCO Park for the fifth consecutive season.
South Division Player of the Week
Mitchell Lohr
Ohio Valley
Catcher
Sophomore
Pataskala, OH (Newark Catholic HS)
The Fighting Scots earned the final seed of the conference tournament by winning two of three against Alderson Broaddus to conclude the regular season. Lohr’s productive week at the plate was a major factor for OVU returning to PRASCO Park.
The sophomore backstop hit 6-for-13 in four games as he slugged four extra-base hits, including a pair of homers, a triple and a double. He had three RBI and crossed home plate six times as the Fighting Scots went up against Salem and AB.
Lohr was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in a pivotal game one series win against the Battlers as he was a single shy of the cycle.
He launched a solo blast in the game two and was 1-for-4 in the rubber match while also reaching on a hit-by-pitch.
South Division Pitcher of the Week
Alex Franzen
Kentucky Wesleyan
RHP
Sophomore
Alexandria, KY (Campbell County HS)
Franzen was pretty much perfect as he came through in a pair of save situations for the regular-season divisional champion Panthers.
He logged just 2.2 innings in two appearances vs. Cedarville, but struck out five of the six hitters faced and didn’t allow a baserunner. His success in the back end of the bullpen was a big reason why KWC celebrated a conference tournament title last season.
Franzen closed out 7-6 and 6-4 finals in favor of the Panthers to earn the top seed from the South Division.
Franzen has appeared in 16 games this season with a 2-0 win-loss record and seven saves.
