INDIANAPOLIS – Three student-athletes from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference were represented on the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Midwest Region Team.
The IWLCA honored 128 total student-athletes in Division II with a selection to one of the All-Region teams for 2018.
These student-athletes are now eligible to be named to a national IWLCA All-American team. The IWLCA will celebrate the 2018 All-Americans during Divisional All-American Announcement Shows, which will be launched online in mid-June.
All three of the Great Midwest’s IWLCA All-Midwest Region Team selections came from Lake Erie as the Storm reeled off a regular-season conference title and the tournament championship in the spring of 2018.
LEC’s first year with the Great Midwest resulted in a 16-2 overall record and a perfect 12-0 league mark under coach of the year Mallory Ferrandiz. The Storm were close to making the NCAA Championship bracket, but didn’t quite make the field as determined by the national committee.
Highlighting the first-team honorees was senior midfielder Cecilia Spin, who was also voted the Great Midwest Defensive Player of the Year.
Two more LEC standouts appeared on the second team as Great Midwest Offensive Player of the Year Anna Spin and First Team All-Great Midwest attack Taylor Mathis each earned respective selections.
Anna Spin, just a junior, tore through the record books with single-season conference records in both goals (65), assists (42) and points (107). She started all 18 possible games for the Storm and fired off 122 shots, including 100 on goal.
Anna Spin was the league leader in all three previously mentioned offensive statistical categories.
The senior Mathis was second on the team with 70 points, including 55 goals and 15 assists.
Spin, Spin and Mathis are the first Great Midwest student-athletes to be named to the IWLCA All-Midwest Region Team in the sport’s third year of existence. Tiffin will join the Great Midwest women's lacrosse standings in the spring of 2019 as a full member institution for the eighth team in the championship-sponsored sport.
