INDIANAPOLIS – Walsh and nationally-ranked Ohio Dominican secured selections for Great Midwest Athletic Conference North Division Baseball Players of the Week as announced on Monday.

Ohio Dominican (22-5, 11-1 G-MAC) was ranked for the fifth consecutive week and the Panthers are currently placed at 16th in the NCBWA Poll. ODU currently leads the North Division standings over Hillsdale (15-17, 12-3 G-MAC) as the Chargers went 2-3 vs. Ohio Valley and Malone.

Findlay, Lake Erie and Walsh, each have nine conference victories as all three first-year schools battle for playoff position.

At present, the North Division is positioned to place as many as five teams (top three, two wild cards) in the Great Midwest Championship bracket. The conference tournament will be conducted against at PRASCO Park in Mason, Ohio.

North Division Player of the Week
Andrew Czech
Walsh
First Base
RS Sophomore
Twinsburg, OH (Twinsburg HS)

For lack of better terminology, the lefty-hitting Czech went on a power binge, belting five home runs in just four games to jolt the Walsh offense.

The Cavaliers went 3-1 over the past week, including a pair of league victories against Findlay and an out-of-conference win against Notre Dame (OH).

Czech slugged a pair of home runs in separate games against each opponent and drove in 12 while going 9-for-18 at the plate with seven runs scored. He slugged 1.333 and sported an on-base percentage of .550.

Czech ripped a pair of two-run shots in the fourth and eighth innings against Notre Dame (OH), recording five RBI in the game while going 3-for-4.

He left the yard for a solo blast in the first game of a three-game series against Findlay and followed that up with a 2-for-5 effort with two RBI to start Sunday’s doubleheader.

Czech launched two more home runs at the expense of the Oilers, a two-run bomb in the first inning and another two-run deep fly in the sixth as the Cavaliers won 8-6.

Czech is now second in the conference in home runs only to Kentucky Wesleyan’s Joseph Burke (13). He’s currently leading the Great Midwest in total bases and is sixth in the league in batting average (.404), fourth in hits (42) and is third in doubles (12) and RBI (36),

North Division Pitcher of the Week
Joe Filosa
Ohio Dominican
RHP
RS Junior
Fort Wayne, IN (Northrop HS)

Filosa is now a two-time recipient of top pitcher weekly honors in the tough North Division after also getting the nod in the final week of February.

The tall 6-3 righty was at it again with a gem against Lake Erie as he fanned nine in six innings for the winning decision. He allowed just one run on three hits.

Filosa improved to 3-0 on the spring with a 3.67 ERA in nine apearances and eight games started. He has logged 41.2 innings and recorded 44 strikeouts.

Filosa is one of the talented arms that has ODU on top of the Great Midwest in team ERA (3.79), opponent batting average (.247), hits allowed and K/9 ratio (9.65).
