South Division Baseball Players of the Week (April 2)

4.2.18

INDIANAPOLIS – Ohio Valley and Kentucky Wesleyan earned respective selections for new Great Midwest Athletic Conference Baseball Players of the Week for the South Division on Monday afternoon.

The South Division is finding its footing through another week of league play against the North. Defending tournament champion and preseason coaches poll favorite Kentucky Wesleyan leads the South Division with a 5-7 record.

Alderson Broaddus was able to win a pair against Walsh crossing over into interleague play while Ohio Valley split against Findlay after a tough start to the conference schedule.

South Division Player of the Week
Travis Perkola
Ohio Valley
Outfield
RS Senior
Macomb, MI (Chattanooga State CC)

Perkola is a hitting machine and one of the toughest outs for an opposing pitcher to record while working through the Fighing Scots lineup.

In a small sample size, Perkola did plenty of damage in a two-game stint against Findlay with a 6-for-9 line at the plate. He had three doubles and drove in a pair as OVU earned its first conference victory.

In the 10-5 OVU win against the Oilers, Perkola was 4-for-5 with two doubles, a single and two RBI.

Perkola is now hitting .320 in 27 games for OVU. He has 33 hits, eight doubles and 14 RBI. He has also been successful for 11 stolen bases and has a team-high 18 runs scored.

South Division Pitcher of the Week
Mitchell Jones
Kentucky Wesleyan
RHP
Junior
Fort Thomas, KY (Highlands HS)

Jones halted what had become a 12-game win streak for North Division contender and No. 15-ranked Ohio Dominican with a strong start to help KWC split a doubleheader.

In a battle of Panthers vs. the Panthers, Jones tossed 5.2 innings and struck out six in the 5-2 KWC win.

Jones gave up just two earned runs scattered on 10 hits to improve to 2-4 on the spring. He received the winning decision as Alex Franzen recorded the final four outs to help beat ODU.

Jones outdueled a former pitcher of the week from the North Division in righty Matt Kittelberger.

Jones has appeared in seven games this spring with five starts. He has 22 strikeouts in 29 innings pitched for KWC.
