INDIANAPOLIS – No. 4 nationally ranked Seton Hill collected both honors for Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Lacrosse Players of the Week as announced on Tuesday.
The Griffins (11-1, 5-0 G-MAC) came through with a huge win over No. 7 Lake Erie (9-2, 6-1 G-MAC) to earn a degree of separation towards winning the title of regular-season champion and conference championship host.
It was a great finish in Greensburg, Pa., as the Storm battled back from a significant halftime deficit to outscore their opponent, 8-5, in the second half as the final score settled at 18-14 in favor of Seton Hill. Both teams have clinched their spot in the four-team Great Midwest Championship bracket.
The first set of North Region rankings will also be published this week with the top four teams from the North and South comprising the eight-team NCAA Division II Championship bracket.
Offensive Player of the Week
Logan Maloni
Seton Hill
Attack
Sophomore
McMurray, PA (Peters Township HS)
While teammate Jack Moran deservedly has earned the spotlight for his numbers compiled over the last two seasons, Maloni emerged to the forefront in one of Seton Hill’s biggest wins in the season to date.
The sophomore led all players in the league in points accumulated over the last week with 12 as he recorded seven goals and five assists.
SHU tallied 28 goals in a win against Davis & Elkins before adding 18 more against seventh-ranked Lake Erie.
Maloni had eight points against the Storm with five goals and three assists, including the game-winning shot. He scored on five of his six shots attempted and all were on target as he played out the entirety of the match.
Against D&E, Maloni had four points with a balanced two goals and a pair of assists as he added four shots, all on goal.
Maloni ranks second on Seton Hill in total points with 41 (18 G and 23 A). The skilled attack is ranked fourth in the league in points per game (3.73).
Defensive Player of the Week
Jay Scerbo
Seton Hill
Midfield
Sophomore
Woolwich, NJ (Kingway HS)
Scerbo’s progression from G-MAC Freshman of the Year to potential defensive player of the year and even NCAA All-American candidate has blossomed full circle with his third defensive conference weekly honor.
The talented second-year student-athlete has been putting up ground ball numbers at a single-season conference record pace and is a big reason why the Griffins lead the league in face-off percentage.
Scerbo won 27-of-34 faceoff attempts against Lake Erie and added 17 ground balls. He also added a goal in the first quarter for good measure.
He also won 17-of-21 to control the faceoffs matchup against D&E while contributing nine more ground balls and his second goal of the week. Scerbo was on the field for all possible 120 minutes in the two games combined.
Scerbo remains the Great Midwest league leader in two key statistical categories – ground balls (10.73 per game) and faceoff percentage (.710). His versatility as a defenseman and specialist is a big reason why SHU has assembled a near-perfect regular-season campaign so far.
