INDIANAPOLIS – The final Great Midwest Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week were announced on Wednesday with Malone collecting both honors.
The entire season has led up to next week’s inaugural Great Midwest/Mountain East Championships hosted by Malone starting on Feb. 14 in C.T. Branin Natatorium.
Men’s Athlete of the Week
Dominic Mariano
Malone
Freshman
Youngstown, OH (Boardman HS)
For the second time this season, Mariano takes home the honor of Great Midwest Men’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week. He first won the award back in December.
The freshman diver won both of his events this week, and has the highest 1 Meter dive score in the conference this year.
He started off the evening against Penn State Behrend with a win in the 1 meter dive finishing with a score of 270.92. He polished off a clean sweep of the diving events after posting a score of 262.85 in the 3 Meter Dive.
It marks the fourth time a member of Malone men’s team has been recognized this year for conference weekly honors.
Women’s Athlete of the Week
Abby Reynolds
Malone
Freshman
Mansfield, OH (Mansfield Christian)
Reynolds completed the strong week from Malone freshmen against Penn State Behrend. Like Mariano, this is also the second time Reynolds has taken home the honor this season.
The freshman took home four first-place finishes this week. Her first event was the 200 Yard Medley Relay. She joined Kalia Butterworth, Denise Quentin, and Carolin Friedrich and helped lead Malone to a first-place finish with a time of 1:55.57.
She then competed individually in the 200 Yard Freestyle where she took home the win by over eight seconds with a time of 1:59.66.
Reynolds followed that up with a victory in the 100 Yard Backstroke. Her time of 1:03.65 was fast enough for 14th best in the conference this season and third best in school history.
Her final event was as a member of the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay alongside Alaina Hartley, Nicole Kenny, and Denise Quentin. Their time of 1:44.17 won the event and was the ninth fastest time in school history.
