CANTON, Ohio - More of the same dominance from the men’s and women’s programs of Findlay carried over into day two of the inaugural Great Midwest Athletic Conference/Mountain East Conference Swimming & Diving Championships.
The Oilers have a commanding lead in the team standings as the talented swim programs directed by Andrew Makepeace continued to make waves in just about every event.
UF’s women’s team total is now at 984 points while Hillsdale is currently second with 642. Malone is third at 443.50 while Davis & Elkins, Alderson Broaddus and Ursuline are next to each other at sixth, seventh and eighth.
In the men’s scoring, Findlay has totaled 915 points while Malone is second with 619. Davis & Elkins and Alderson Broaddus are fifth and eighth, respectively.
Findlay won nine combined events on Thursday evening at C.T. Branin Natatorium following the morning preliminaries.
Swedish sophomore Hanna Cederholm leads all swimmers in the field with five total first-place finishes, including the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay on Thursday alone. She also won the 200 IM and was part of the 200 medley relay on Wednesday.
Five-time Great Midwest Athlete of the Week Janko Radmanovic from Findlay has captured titles in four events to lead all men. On Thursday, he finished first in the 100 butterfly and as a member of the 400 medley relay.
Meet host Malone also celebrated its first-ever G-MAC/MEC champion in the 1-meter diving competition with freshman Dominic Mariano holding up the first-place prize on the awards podium.
Mariano finished strong with his final dive for a total score of 430.60 and the two-time Great Midwest Athlete of the Week will look to duplicate his success in the 3-meter distance later.
The Pioneers’ women’s 400 medley relay unit finished second to Findlay with former Great Midwest Athletes of the Week Denise Quentin and Abby Reynolds both in the pool.
Hillsdale also finished second only to Findlay in the women’s 400 medley relay with Anika Ellingson and Katherine Heeres, also conference athletes of the week, helping the Chargers gain 56 team points in the scoring.
A near-perfect day in the pool for the Oilers was just one hundredth of a second away as Fairmont State’s Courtney Deem edged out Findlay’s Amanda Stiegal in a photo-line finish in the 200 freestyle finals.
Deem touched the wall in 1:51.15 while Stiegal was timed at 1:51.16, the closest margin possible separating first from runner-up. Both were NCAA B-cut times and Steigal still have three wins in her pocket, two relays and the 50 freestyle.
Deem has now won two of the three titles for the Mountain East. She also claimed the 1000 freestyle title yesterday while Notre Dame’s Seth Roberts won the 50 freestyle on opening day.
Ben Rath won his second individual title (1,000 freestyle) with the 200 freestyle win by under a second against Davis & Elkins’ Pedro Gaspar.
The third day of competition will get underway tomorrow morning with more preliminaries at 10 AM ET.
